Summary: This is for kids? 2008-10-14
Comment: I'm an adult POTC fan who buys the occasional bit of memorabilia here and there - saw this at someone's house and just HAD to have it. So I am using it mostly as a display piece in my den. There seems to be several versions of this, with different features (plastic sails, black sails, grey sails). Somewhat annoyingly I received the grey-sail version with black masts - would have preferred the gold crosspieces? like on the box.
Assembled, for the most part this is an impressive piece that just looks really cool. Some uneven manufacturing - on the one hand, the lanterns, back decoration, and figurehead are made of a softer plastic and are nicely detailed. On the other hand the iconic black sails of the Pearl are just this horrible cheap fabric, and if you have seen "At World's End" you notice that the sails are blackish, and heavily patched up from damage that happened in "Dead Man's Chest". It's something about POTC and the Black Pearl you don't think about, but you really notice it when the Pearl's iconic black sails are dealt with this indifferently - also the cloth is just stuffed into tight slits in the plastic mast crosspieces - probably will be difficult to fix if the sails are ever pulled out.
I would have given this a "4" rating but sadly, although assembled it is a really cool toy, I have to agree with other annoyed reviewers about assembly and durability. The main masts went in their holes, but don't fit tightly. Had a terrible time getting the largest crow's nest on - and how long would this string you lower figures on last - plus you use a dial to wind it back up again - and wouldn't the two retracting lines on the 2 crows' nests topple after being pulled on by a kid? Other features seem to me too frustrating or finicky for a child - the exploding side is neat, but you have it finesse it back together. The captain's cabin and the section under that swings away seem to fall apart too easily for a child's use. Some sections the plastic seems way too thin to stand up to heavy play. BTW the firing cannons seem to fine for kids, they fire well but not hard enough to do damage.
It's too bad as the designers seemed like they had a lot of fun adding features to this - I can see for the right kids it would definitely provide hours of play and fun, as long as it held together. I can also see why it gets mixed reviews - this is a fairly good, feature-packed, rendition of the Black Pearl, but has some durability and assembly issues. I'm happy enough with it, and if I get inclined may someday improve the sails, ratlines, grey deck, etc. For kids - get some model cement and glue all parts not used in play. Overall - great toy for the right family, use glue, and it DOES suck that my version came with NO figures. I am using an inexpensive 3 1/4" Disney-made set, they are not too bad, but eventually will shell out for the more expensive Zizzle-made figures. The ship looks forlorn completely empty, but parents should factor in the cost of the figures which looks like it could add up fast.

Summary: Great for kids - but pieces that fall off will drive parents crazy!!! 2008-06-22
Comment: Our little one is a huge an of the Pirates movies - and is also very into imaginative play. Hence we purchased this and she really does love it - this ship is huge, with lots of little compartments, detail, effects and the room for her to play and create adventures!
However, this is one of those toys that kids will love, and parents will find mighty fustrating!
Simply moving this toy results in various pieces falling off!!! It is designed so pieces come off to reveal other activities...but it would be nice if one could actually take off a piece, rather than have it topple off with just the slightest movement!
Like many others have suggested, you can glue some pieces in place such as the masts which never stay put...however, in our case, even the strongest superglue did not last long, and once again the masts fall off! I think its partly poor design as these things are a bit too top heavy and the maker could have made a toy where the pieces clip into place a little more securely which might prevent this from happening!
All in all its a toy that your child will love and have many hours of fun with - but parents might find it a tad fustrating having to assemble it before and during play on a frequent basis!
Great concept - iffy design!

Summary: total junk 2008-05-26
Comment: Will not stay together, after 3 days of play and being put back together over and over again the peaces are now so worn out that with out being glued they will not stay together ever again. If I had intended on putting something together over and over again I would have just bought the mega block black pearl instead.

Summary: Throw in a little super glue! 2008-03-03
Comment: My little bro got this for christmas and it is now been a few months since we got this ship (some of the reviews are confused, there a at least 3 versions of this ship), we got the particular one that has most of the main characters, but no crew. The ship doe need a lot of glue mostly in the decor, the stern (behind)lanterns and the prow figure and rail. the mast has a tendency to fall, they might have included another one of those rope-things (look at the pix of the ship, main mast, that thing really stabalizes the mast and that one hasent fallen off for 3 months!)
one of the aft mast would help, you can see were you would attach it plastick rope to the ship. I even took of the one set of stabaliver and it fit on the front really good. the cannons work on the deck of the ship there are little slots were they can go. I actualy would have goten the set with no guys so I could get the set of all the guys WITH WEAPONS this set does have them (guys and weapons)but, of you get more guys the ecomomical way there are going to ge duplicats. so when are we going to get a Flying Duchman?

Summary: A Hit! 2008-01-21
Comment: If your child likes the Jack Sparrow movies you'll want this toy for them. Yes, it is not the most durable toy and I wouldn't suggest letting 3-4 5 y/o play with it simultanously. I took a previously written review to heart and glued alot of the "loose" parts into place. However the hyper cousin visiting after the holidays managed to disprove the super glue commercial. However the McGyver in the parental units proved handy and the mast has been repaired good as new. Buy it and get some glue!
